Respect the Local Culture and Customs

• Dubai is a part of the United Arab Emirates, a country deeply rooted in Islamic traditions. While the city is known for its modern and liberal outlook, it's essential to respect local customs. Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or public spaces. Public displays of affection should be minimal, and during Ramadan, eating or drinking in public during daylight hours is prohibited.

Best Time to Visit Dubai

• Dubai's weather can be extreme, with scorching summers and mild winters. The best time to visit is between November and March when the temperatures are more comfortable. During these months, you can enjoy outdoor activities, desert safaris, and explore the city without the intense heat. Unfortunately, my preference to avoid the tourism crowd drove me to visit in July (the absolute worst possible month to visit). Triple digit desert temps combined with the Arabian Gulf makes for a thick cloud of humidity that engulfs the city. In fact, the tallest man made structure in the world -the Burj Khalifa- is engineered to bank the condensation that collects on the exterior of the building. This is what replenishes the building's reservoir that supplies the water to it occupants. Think on that for a second!

Getting Around Dubai

• Dubai has an excellent public transportation system, including the Dubai Metro, buses, and taxis. The Metro is a cost-effective and convenient way to travel around the city, especially for tourists. Taxis are widely available but can be more expensive. Renting a car is also an option, but be aware of the city's traffic rules and parking fees.

Currency and Payment Methods

• The currency used in Dubai is the UAE Dirham (AED). Credit cards are widely accepted in most places, but it's a good idea to carry some cash for smaller purchases or in case you visit traditional markets, known as souks. ATMs are readily available throughout the city. It's best to select AED currency when prompted to choose the currency type you want to be charged in. Choosing USD can result in currency exchange fees.
